Legend has it that the original Brajeshwari Temple was built by the Pandavas of the Mahabharata after Goddess Durga appeared in their dreams and instructed them to build a temple in her honor. When the ancient temple was destroyed in the earthquake of 1905, it was rebuilt by the government. Dedicated to Goddess Brajeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple is also known as Kangra Devi Mandir.
